This book uncovers the little-known world of ancient Indian espionage. The history of the espionage in India is as old as man. The earliest references to it are traceable in the Rgveda. Spies known as spa? were employed by deities like Indra, Varu?a and Soma to gather information relevant to the governance and welfare of the kingdom. The system continued in the post-Vedic age and the services of the spies were utilized by rulers. References about the system are given in the epics, Ni?i works, Pura?as etc.
Spies were not just secret agents but trusted instruments of governance helping rulers to maintain order and ensure security of the state. The book explores the evolution and development of the intelligence system from Vedic times onwards. How the system came into vogue, how it operated, what was its role in implementing four policies of the state, and in safeguarding the kingdom against internal unrest and external danger, etc. are the aspects covered in the book.
The role of diplomats—who often acted as spies in plain sight and the ingenious methods they used to gather and transmit information discreetly, is also analysed. The objectives of the espionage system have also been discussed.
The espionage system in ancient India was not random or ad hoc but structured and deeply integrated into governance. The principles that guided it remain as relevant as ever in today`s complex security environment.

ABOUT Author
Dr. Amlesh Kumar Mishra, an alumnus of Ranchi University, is presently serving as Director, History Division and Armed Forces Film and Photo Division of the Ministry of Defence. After graduating from St. Xavier`s College, Ranchi, he did Masters in History and Sanskrit with distinction and cleared the NET examination conducted by the UGC. He has received a Ph.D. degree from Ranchi University, Ranchi.
His book Pracheen Bhartiya Rajanayamein Guptacharon ka Mahatva was awarded by the Hon’ble President of India. He has edited the book Deeds of Gallantry: 50 Years of the 1971 Victory and has authored the chapters War at Sea and War in the Sky of the book, 1971 War: An Illustrated History published by the History Division, Ministry of Defence.
He is also the author of Honours and Awards of the Indian Armed Forces and Saga of Valour: Winners of Mahavir Chakra. In addition, he has translated Saga of Valour: PVC & AC Winners as Parakram Gatha: Paramvir aur ASoka Chakra Vijeta and the Sanskrit drama Abhijan Sakuntalam into Hindi.
