Every since Kazakhstan declared its independence in 1991
soon after the collapse of the former USSR, there has been sweeping changes to
take the country along the path of democratization. In the process, the first
post-Soviet Constitution was adopted in 1993 and in 1994, a parliamentary
election was held that created in first
post- independence national Parliament. However, in 1995, a new
Constitution approved by a referendum preserved the extensive executive powers
of the President.

Dr.
Mukesh Kumar Mishra is associated with Central Asian Area Studies
Programme, Centre for Inner Asian Studies, School of International Studies,
Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi since 2010. He has his M.Phil (2002) and
Ph.D (2008) from the same University. In 2006, he had undertaken Field Study
Trip to Almaty and Astana (Kazakhstan) for his doctoral research.
