China in Xi Jinping’s New Era looks through the domestic political and socioeconomic decisions China has made during Xi`s “New Era”. It argues that Xi Jinping has emulated Mao Zedong to become a populist nationalist strong leader on the one hand, and announced the arrival of China as a serious player at the global stage on the other. The former is mirrored by his “people oriented” approach to development, alleviation of poverty, the “internal circulation” and the “common prosperity” etc., campaigns.  The latter is demonstrative of his global governance approaches synchronised through “Building Community of Shared Future for the Mankind” and “New Type of International Relations – the two pillars of Xi`s diplomacy, to which new flanks  such as Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and the Chinese Modernisation have been added. Besides, it also delves into issues pertaining to Xi’s governance of the Party, economy, and handling of various social issues including corruption, real estate bubble bust and dissidence. The collected articles peep into Xi Jinping`s “New Era” and attempt to decipher the direction China would be taking vis-à-vis its domestic and foreign policy in days to come.

B. R. Deepak is professor of Chinese studies at the Centre for Chinese and South East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Some of his recent authored works include, India`s China Dilemma: The Lost Equilibrium and Widening Asymmetries and India and China: Beyond the Binary of Friendship and Enmity. He is the first Indian to have translated The Four Books of Confucianism (The Analects of Confucius, The Mencius, The Great Learning and The Mean) from Chinese to Hindi.
