ABOUT THE BOOK

Of all challenges that dog human security the world over terrorism is perhaps the most pernicious. Spreading its toxic tentacles worldwide, the cumulative effect on overall lives of teeming masses especially in India`s South Asian neighbourhood is telling. In this book, Lt.Gen. Subroto Mitra, offers an incisive account of not only the origins of terrorism in this significant world region but also traces the journey each of the SAARC nations have traversed facing this menace.

He observes the faultlines in each country`s reaction to terror taking root and entrenching itself. More importantly he examines recent developments to underline the debilitating effect the issue has had on the political, economic, social and even regional levels. He also makes country-wise recommendations to counter terrorism from a holistic point of view. Here, Gen. Mitra is certain that regional cooperative mechanisms be strengthened and new avenues for joint action, forged.

The Lurking Hydra: South Asia`s Terror Travail puts forth a convincing argument for India alongwith its smaller neighbours to chart a future course that identifies the factors that have aided terrorism to take root as well as a range of options to successfully overcome this vexing obstacle. This follows his critical analysis of the detrimental impact terror activities have had on the region so far.

A highly decorated soldier-scholar Lt.Gen. Subroto Mitra, with vast practical knowledge of serving in worst terror-affected areas of India offers a unique perspective in this book. His flair for history and his deep faith in the prospect of cooperation at the regional level to deliver a fitting reply to the recurring problem are showcased here.

Rather than offering a military or strategic approach to dealing with terror his treatment of the issue from a holistic angle definitely adds value to the terrorism-related discourse especially on a geographical region that remains one of the worst affected ones.
