The book is a compilation of humorous real life stories from various aspects of military life in the Indian Army. Spanning 452 pages, with illustrations, the book is laid out in five parts. It includes excerpts from the first letter written by Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBE, the first Indian Chief, to all officers of the Indian Army after independence, which is, amazingly, as relevant today more than six decades later. Experiences of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, MC, have been recounted that make a fascinating reading. The book brings to life, the tough yet exciting life of cadets in the National Defence Academy and the Indian Military Academy, as it happens. It covers fascinating incidents from all facets of life in the army, and from the author`s personal experience in the UN mission and foreign mission where he served as the Defence Attaché.
The foreword has been written by Shri Mani Shankar Aiyar, Honourable Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha). He has an emotional connection with the army, as his father-in-law made the supreme sacrifice in Burma during the Second World War as a young officer. As a career diplomat, he has friends from many armies and understands the services well. The book is not simply a collection of anecdotes. It reflects the pride and the spirit of Indian soldiers. It also explains, as it goes along, the values and the ethos of various institutions that form our army.
The book will be a nostalgic journey down memory lane. All soldiers will strike an immediate chord. The young men planning to don the `Olive Green` will find it motivating. The civilian readers too will find this book extremely captivating and get an insight into the Army way of life through these real life stories, packaged with a fine sense of military humour. The book guarantees you cheer and smile, the army way.
