Disasters occur frequently in different
parts of the world because of climate change. In fact, no place on this earth
is free from disasters. India is highly disaster prone and suffers untold
misery, irreparable damage to property and environment. At the present juncture
of development-environment conflict, it is necessary to sensitize people to
cope with suddenly changing situations. Twelve papers on different aspects of
disasters are presented and analyzed for sustainable development. The
contributors belong to diversified disciplines ranging from geographers and
defense experts to social scientists and human rights professionals. It is
hoped that the present book will fulfill the long-felt needs of people engaged
in the field of disaster management.

Rajesh Anand is
Joint Secretary, University Grants Commission, and former Professor of
the Department of Earth Sciences, Manipur University, Imphal. He specializes in
Disaster Management and has undertaken various research projects. He has also
supervised scholars in this field.
Dr. N.C. Jana is an Applied Geographer currently
working as Reader in Geography in University of Burdwan, West Bengal. He has
authored three books, contributed many research papers to various journals and
edited several volumes. He was also actively engaged in Post-Doctoral research
and teaching in Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Sudhir Singh is teaching in the Department of
Political Science, Dyal Singh College (M), University of Delhi. He did his
doctorate from School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University,
New Delhi. His area of research includes diverse aspects of International
Politics.
